Overall Notes

  1. Be sure to specify as many search words as possible to narrow the search. If you try only a few search words, the number of hits becomes huge, and it takes much more time to search.
  2. Only up to 200 records will be displayed. If there are more than 200 records, narrow your search by adding the publication year or other terms. (With Webcat Plus, more than 200 records can be displayed.)
  3. For wildcard searches, add an asterisk (*) at the end of a word or a partial word.

Title

  1. Only Kanji can be used to specify the full title of Japanese-language materials.
  2. To specify the title of a Japanese publication in single words, you may use Kanji, Katakana, Hiragana, or Romaji, or a combination of them.
  3. Divide up compound words into single words when specifying them.
  4. Click here for rules on using Kana-Romaji conversion in this system. Long vowels are spelled out in Romaji according to their reading.
  5. Alphabet letters and numbers are specified as is. However numbers in Kanji are changed to Arabic numbers.

Author

  1. The name of the author must be separated into the last and first names with a space in-between.
  2. Spell the name of a non-Japanese author as it is in the original language. (In some cases, your search may succeed by using the Japanese rendition used in translation, but this is not accurate.) Omit periods for initials.

Publisher and Publication Year

  1. If you specify only a publisher and a publication year to search on, the number of hits will be huge. Always be sure to use other search words in combination.
  2. You cannot use wildcard searches for the publication year.

Free keywords

  1. In addition to the search fields [Title] and [Author], you can also include the subject matter, classification, etc. as free keywords.
  2. Expect this to be a more time-consuming search because the search field is very broad.
  3. Searching only by subject and classification will produce a huge number of hits. Always combine free keywords with other search words.

Full Title

  1. You must specify the entire title, not a partial title.
  2. Do not separate the words in the title with spaces.

Wildcard errors

  1. You cannot do a wildcard search on a single letter, such as "a*". Make sure to specify several letters.
  2. You cannot do a wildcard search on the publication year, such as "199*". Make sure to specify a four-digit Western year.

What is a RECON file?

A RECON file is a catalog data file created by a library using NACSIS-CAT. To distinguish RECON files from the general catalog database, titles are displayed beginning with "***".
Please keep the following points in mind when using RECON files.
  1. There is some duplication of data in the general catalog database.
  2. Be sure to contact the library about its current collection status.
